TOKYO, JAPAN – 20 January 2009 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that it has shipped a total of 1.5 million cable modems since 2003 that support data over cable service interface specifications (DOCSIS®) 2.0. This milestone has strengthened Motorola’s market leadership in cable modems in Japan.
Established by Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. (CableLabs®), DOCSIS is a set of specifications that enable the delivery of high speed internet services to subscribers. In Japan, a country with very-high internet penetration rates and known for its population of advanced broadband users, there is a strong interest in high-speed data services support of advanced multimedia services like network based multi-player gaming, high quality video conferencing and peer-to-peer social networking. The Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced that the number of households subscribing to cable television had reached 2 million during the past years from July 2003 to June 2008.
In Japan, where high-speed broadband services are widely available, cable television service providers face keen competition with telecommunications carriers who provide a wide range of services over optical fiber networks. As consumer demand for even higher-speed internet access grows, DOCSIS 3.0 with channel bonding allows service providers to offer ultra-broadband services which enhance the personalized media experience. Since April 2008, Motorola has provided Jupiter Telecommunications Co., Ltd. (J:COM) and other operators in the Asia Pacific region with DOCSIS 3.0-certified Cable Modem and DOCSIS 3.0-qualified Cable Modem Termination System solutions supporting nationwide development of ultra- broadband services.
As a leading provider of cable modems in Japan and globally, Motorola has contributed significantly to the development of the DOCSIS 1.x, 2.0 and 3.0 specifications.
Motorola is number one in market share for cable modems globally, with cumulative worldwide shipments of Motorola’s SURFboard® cable modems and digital voice modems (modems with telephone functions) surpassed 60 million shipments as of mid-2008, making Motorola the undisputed leading company in this market segment worldwide.
Motorola has the products and experience to deploy next-generation, ultra-broadband solutions for operators in any size residential or commercial service area, from greenfield to mature markets.
