Point Foundation, the largest scholarship-granting organization in the U.S. for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) students of merit, has honored Motorola with its 2009 Point Inspiration Award. Motorola is recognized as a corporation that champions respect for, and inclusion of, the GLBT community. Motorola and the Motorola Foundation have been proud supporters of the Point Foundation, which provides financial support, leadership training and mentoring to GLBT students who demonstrate leadership, scholastic achievement, community involvement and financial need. Motorola began its advocacy for the GLBT community in 2000, when the company established its first GLBT Business Council, began providing domestic partner benefits and added sexual orientation and gender identity to its non-discrimination policies. Other highlights in Motorola's advocacy of the GLBT community include:
- Earlier this month, the Human Rights Campaign announced that Motorola --- for the sixth consecutive year --- achieved a 100 percent rating on its Corporate Equality Index and again is ranked among the "Best Places to Work" for GLBT employees.
- In 2002, Motorola became a founding member of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), which is committed to representing more than 1.4 million GLBT businesses and ensuring increased opportunity and equality for GLBT professionals. In 2008, the NGLCC recognized Motorola as its Corporation of the Year.
- Since 2006, Motorola has been a sponsor of the annual Out & Equal Workplace Associates Summit, sharing best practices and experiences in workplace diversity and inclusion and encouraging other organizations to adopt policies, practices and benefits that create a fair and equitable workplace for GLBT employees.
- This year, Motorola joined the Business Coalition for Workplace Fairness, and endorsed the passage of the 2009 Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which will provide federal protection of GLBT people in the workplace.
